Chapter 8

Tuesday, October 30

Coffee Cat Books was busy the next morning, so Tara and I hadn’t had the opportunity to chat. Cassie had come in to help out for the week, and Willow had agreed to work half days as well. I was curious to find out what, if anything, Finn might be able to uncover now that he was back on the murder case, but truth be told, what was really occupying my mind, was my upcoming nuptials. Cody had called Father Bartholomew, who confirmed the church was available on the seventeenth, although he was concerned we wouldn’t have time to go through the counseling program required of each couple before they were married in the Catholic Church. Cody explained the reason for our haste, and eventually, Father Bartholomew agreed to make an exception and allow us to marry without having completed all the sessions.

I knew Cody was going to ask Danny to be his best man; they had been best friends for years. I’d been Siobhan’s maid of honor and considered asking her to stand up for me, but Tara was my best friend, so I was asking her. I’d ask Siobhan and Cassie to be bridesmaids and Cody would ask Aiden and Finn to serve as groomsmen. I’d already decided everyone could just wear something they already owned given the tight timeline. I knew Aunt Maggie would make me a dress that was both simple and beautiful and planned to call her later in the day.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” I asked Tara once the crowd from the first ferry had dispersed.

“Sure. What’s up?”

“Let’s go into the office.”

Tara followed me with a look of concern on her face. “Is everything okay?”

“Everything’s great, but Cody and I have come to a decision and it affects you.”

Tara looked cautious. “Okay.”

“You know I’ve been stressing over the situation with Cody’s mother and her insistence that we marry in Florida.”

“Yes. I’m aware of the situation and the grief it’s caused.”

“Cody worked out a compromise that will allow us to get married on Madrona Island, but in exchange we have to agree to spend two weeks in Florida over Christmas and New Year’s.”

Tara smiled. “You’re finally going to set a date?”

“We are. I mean, we have. I wanted to talk to you right away because that’s our busiest time.”

Tara hugged me. “Oh my God, Cait. You’re getting married. I’m so happy for you. Don’t worry about the bookstore. We’ll figure it out. So when’s the wedding?”

“November 17.”

“This November 17?”

I nodded. “We didn’t want to wait. I know it’s less than three weeks away, but I really want a small, simple wedding with family and close friends.”

Tara hugged me again. “I’m so happy for you. I can’t believe my best friend is getting hitched.”

“I can’t believe it either. Will you be my maid of honor?”

Tara started to cry. She managed to nod her head before she wrapped me in a hug so tight, I wasn’t sure I could breathe. I asked her not to say anything to anyone until I had the chance to tell my mother.
